Tummy Tuck/Abdominopasty

Fat accumulation, abdominal laxity (loose belly skin) and stretch marks are common complaints among women after pregnancy. During pregnancy, the abdominal fascia is overstretched, leading to fascial laxity and even separation of rectus abdominis muscles (also know as diastasis recti). Women with diastasis recti don't have a strong abdominal wall holding the organs in place. The resulting abdominal bulge, abdominal laxity and loose belly skin cannot be fixed with simple liposuction. Abdominoplasty involving tightening the abdominal fascia with sutures is the more appropriate treatment option to restore a firmer and flatter abdomen.

The Causes of Abdominal Laxity (Loose Belly Skin)

  1. Loose skin
    It is often accompanied by fat accumulation and stretch marks.
  2. Weakened fascia around abdominal wall
    The thinning and widening of the linea alba causes abdominal bulge.

Abdominoplasty operations can be subdivided into:

1.Abdominoplasty for postpartum loose belly skin and stretch marks

  1. Less Invasive Partial (or Mini-) Abdominoplasty
    A 15-20cm incision is made above the pubic hair. The skin and fat of the lower abdomen are detached up to the navel. The muscle fascia wall is tightened with sutures. Then the skin is stretched down till above the pubic hair with the excess skin being removed, followed by incision closed with sutures. Mini-abdominoplasty addresses a limited area of abdominoplasty to just the lower abdomen.
  2. Complete Abdominoplasty
    A transverse incision is made above the pubic hair. The skin is detached from the fascia and stretched. Excess skin and fat are removed and the abdominal wall is reinforced. Then the skin is pulled down, followed by incision closed with sutures. The navel is repositioned to achieve aesthetic improvement.

2. Complex Abdonimoplasty (Complete abdominoplasty + water-assisted liposuction)

Complete abdominoplasty can correct excess sagging skin and Diastasis recti. However for patients who are overweight or with significant amount of excess fat, complex abdominoplasty combining liposuction and abdominoplasty that removes excess skin via incision above the pubis is recommended to achieve the goal of lower body contouring. In Charm United Institute, we strictly adopt the innovative SAFELipo liposuction technique that incorporates three steps

  1. "S" fat separation from surrounding vessels, nerves, muscles and fascia tissues;
  2. "A" fat aspiration;
  3. "FE" fat equalization evens out the fat left in the subcutaneous layer. In hand of an expert surgeon with great patience and extreme carefulness, SAFELipo can produce smooth, toned and natural contours.

Loose abdominal skin problem is often coupled with belly fat accumulation. Complex abdominoplasty can fix both problems and improve the contours.

Indications for Abdominoplasty

Q 1.Will the scar be obvious?

In the first few months, the scar will be pink and seems to be obvious. With massage and Steri-Strip, the scar will become a thin white line if it is carefully cared.

Q 2.Can stretch marks be removed?

Stretch marks form during rapid growth of the body. When dermis extremely tears, skin is no longer elastic, which leads to dark or light marks. Stretch marks can’t be removed after its formation; however, by performing tummy tuck, stretch marks that appear lower than belly bottom can be removed along with exceed skin. For other marks in the upper part, it will become less obvious when skin is lifted.

Q 3.What is the result of tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck can flatten your abdomen and make your waist smaller. Along with lipo suction, your abdomen will have a more toned and slimmer appearance.

Q 4.What should I do after the operation?

It is necessary to wear compression garments for 4-6 weeks. Avoid sneezing and coughing after within two weeks, especially constipation. After two weeks, you can do everything normally. As for extreme exercise, please wait till 4-6 months. With core workout, the outcome will be even more perfect.

Q 5.Will the scar be obvious after tummy tuck? Is there any way to hide it?

The scar will be a thin long mark on underbelly. It will be placed as low as the underwear can cover, so it won’t be recognized easily.

Q 6.I had surgery in abdomen area before. Can I still have tummy tuck?

Basically there’s no restriction. Tummy tuck can even eliminate the old surgery scar.

Postoperative Care

  1. Stitches are removed 1-2 weeks after surgery. The recovery is about 3-6 weeks.
  2. Wound closure strips can be used to secure the wound after the stitches are removed. Begin scar massage 14 days after the surgery as instructed by the doctor and continue for 3-6 months to decrease scar tissue build up.
  3. Sleep or lie reclined with back and knee elevated. Keep a bend at the waist when changing position to reduce pain and wound tension and enhance wound healing.
  4. Immediately wear compression garment after the surgery for 2-3 months to decrease pain and minimize swelling.
